What is the purpose of the project?

To teach people about transportation issues and services. To help RICCs and other local groups learn how to advocate for better transportation.

 

What will the project do?

In 2007:

  • Develop training materials

  • Choose local groups to work with and start the training. 

  • Create brochures or booklets about local transportation options.

In 2008:

  • Hold 3 regional conferences around the state

  • Keep training and helping local groups on transportation advocacy

  • Develop more training materials

In 2009:

  • Hold a statewide conference

  • Keep working with local groups

  • Create a network of trainers

In 2010:

  • Publish the results of the conferences

  • Publicize the network of trainers

  • Keep working with local groups

Who will participate?

  • People with disabilities and their families

  • People with high support needs

  • People from diverse cultures

  • Riders, service providers, advocates and other allies

  • RICCs, other advocacy groups and transportation coalitions

What are some of the training unit topics?

  • Basics of Advocacy

  • Basics of Public Transportation

  • Local Advisory Councils (LAC)

  • Rules for Running Meetings (basics of parliamentary procedure)

Other possible topics of interest to local areas, such as:

  • Community Investment in Public Transportation

  • Being Part of a Millage Campaign

  • Transportation Voucher Programs

  • Rider Safety

  • Building a Transportation Advocacy Coalition

How could units be used?

  • Workshops or conferences

  • Community presentations

  • Developing a local transportation advocacy plan

Other possible topics of interest to local areas, such as:
