Community Investment in Public Transportation
There are many
reasons why communities should invest in public transportation.
Three of the most important are:
The
Transportation Riders
United web site has many other reasons, and more details. See the
following information on their site:
The Many Benefits of Public Transit - Transit offers more than just
a way to get around. Here are many other benefits.
The Economic Benefits of Public Transit - Transit creates specific,
measurable economic opportunities and benefits.
Transit-Oriented Development - Many transit benefits are best
realized when built with transit-oriented development - walkable, dense,
mixed-use development.

Public Transit Providers in Michigan

listing is on the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT ) website, at:

Public
Transportation and Land Use
United Cerebral
Palsy of Michigan is collaborating with the Michigan Land Use Institute (MLUI),
an environmental policy and advocacy organization, on issues of joint
interest. Together we have produced four reports about transportation and
related land use issues in Michigan.
Click here for resources on Land Use.
Transportation Policy Advocacy
Transportation
advocacy and disability coalitions have developed position papers on
transportation policy. While the papers are not identical, they differ
primarily in the issues they emphasize. The positions on the issues are
generally consistent. A couple papers can be downloaded here.
A coalition of
19 Disability organizations developed positions on a number of issues,
including transportation. The 2005 publication is "Investing
in Our Common Future." UCP Michigan has submitted a
draft revision of the Transportation section for a 2007 update.

The State of
Senior Transportation in Michigan.
Through a grant
from the Michigan Office of Services to the Aging, United Cerebral Palsy of
Michigan prepared a comprehensive study and report
on transportation programs serving Michigan residents age 60 and older. The study identifies transportation for seniors in
every Michigan county, identifies gaps in transportation for seniors, and
makes recommendations to improve the ability of Michigan seniors to remain
actively involved in their communities through access to transportation
services.
